Lift Kit in Acworth, GA

An Introduction to Lift & Leveling Kits

Most manufacturers build their trucks so the rear is higher than the front. This is known as “rake” and makes hauling heavy loads easier. If you drive a truck with a thousand pounds loaded in the bed, the additional weight will cause the truck's rear springs to compress.

As a result, the rear will drop by a few inches. Because the truck's rear is already higher than the front from the factory rake, this isn't as much of a problem. You can haul heavy supplies and equipment without too much of a “sag” in the rear.

If the truck was built so the rear was level to the front and you placed a thousand pounds in the bed, the extra weight would bottom out the suspension. In turn, this would cause the shocks, bushings, and other parts to wear out before they should. Your ride quality would be poor, and the truck's handling would suffer.

Fortunately, there are ways to modify your truck, Jeep, or SUV to look great and still provide the performance capabilities you need. This is when you should consider aftermarket lift kits and leveling kits.

Why Install a Leveling Kit?

A leveling kit allows you to level your truck by raising the front a few inches. Truck owners who install leveling kits often do so for the look, as factory rake can be noticeable when you're not hauling. Leveling kits also increase ground clearance by a small amount, so you can install larger tires.

If you're wondering about hauling capabilities after a leveling kit installation, that's another pro. Since the rear remains untouched, your payload capacity is the same as it was prior to the install.

Leveling kits aren't too complex. Within a leveling kit, you usually have coil spacers and torsion keys or strut extensions (depending on your truck’s suspension). Most leveling kits don't require a service technicians to jack up your vehicle, either. This saves time on installation.

Strut Extensions:

Strut Extensions are leveling kits where a spacer is added on top of your factory strut. There's no modification of factory parts involved, so it's a more affordable option than others. This also makes strut extension lifts easy to remove if the need ever arises. Strut extensions are made for vehicles that use a coilover strut for their front suspension (most late-model SUVs and half ton trucks).

Available Brands: Off Road Unlimited, Revtek, and more.

Torsion Keys:

You can lift your vehicle by modifying the torsion bar with torsion keys. Aftermarket torsion keys are generally sturdier and stronger than the ones your vehicle's manufacturer uses. If you're purchasing aftermarket torsion keys, it's recommended you buy a torsion key adjustor tool as well. This is useful for any future modifications.

Available Brands: Pro Comp and more.

Coil Spacers:

Coil spacer leveling kits are similar to strut extensions, except you're adding a spacer to your factory spring buckets in this instance. With coil spacers, you're still able to enjoy your factory stance and ride while taking advantage of truck leveling kit benefits. It's important to note that certain coil spacer installations will also require the installation of shock extensions. Most coil spacer leveling kits include these to compensate for your lift.

Block Kits:

A block kit is sometimes confused with a standard leveling kit, but it's a distinct modification. If you're changing the height of your vehicle's rear end, then block kits are an ideal way to go. With block kits, you can increase the height of the rear and change the rake so it's better suited for towing and hauling.

Leveling Kits vs Lift Kits

Leveling kits aren't for hardcore off-roading. If you're looking to for an all-out off-road warrior, then a suspension lift kit is a better option. Suspension lift kits are more complex than leveling kits, with many options available for raising your vehicle. If you mostly drive on the road frequently and simply like the aggressive stance of a raised vehicle, then a leveling kit is a cost-effective option that will meet your needs.
